Club Championships Finals night 2024

Small Club with big Ambitions
Saturday 13th January was identified by the club committee to launch the re opening of the squash club to the public. At a time where most adults have over indulged across the festive period it was fitting to provide an opportunity to participate in what has been recognised as the number one health and fitness sport.
The court which is located alongside the Mercy Hall on the grounds of Coláiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon has lay idle for up to 30 years and is at this point back in full swing again. This turnabout has been possible due to the ongoing efforts of local people and local businesses. The enthusiasm locally for positive development within the town is evident in the generosity, dedication and commitment taken to regenerate the club. Special thanks too to the board of management of the school in recognising these efforts and contributing to the process. The 40 attendees on the day were treated to an opening address from Ivan O’Mahony (Club secretary and PE teacher within the school), an official ribbon cutting from Michael Gallagher, exhibition games, as well as tea coffee and refreshments.
The Ballyshannon Squash Club Facebook page is very active in its promotion of the game and raising awareness locally. The club at the time of the open day boasts a pre-registered membership of 30 strong. It is hoped this number will grow through opportunities like the clubs ‘Come and Try Night’ every Wednesday from 7 –9pm.
Reasons for joining however should stretch beyond a new year’s resolution and being informed with the many benefits physically and socially that squash can fulfil would ensure better value for your investment in your new active lifestyle.
Squash is a fast-moving sport and is an excellent cardiovascular workout. It is a game that can be played at any age and is easy to learn. There are many modified game types and various equipment can be used to suit every size and skill level, enabling squash to be played as either a leisure or competitive sport.
Played in 175 countries by an estimated 20 million people on approximately 50,000 courts, Ballyshannon is proud to add to these ever-increasing numbers. The potential value of squash to any individual who commits to it is vast and this message is currently echoed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in World Squash’s bid to include squash as an Olympic Sport.
Given there are no age, size or physical strength limitations, it is a life-long sport and the club looks forward to providing this opportunity locally for its immediate and wider communities.
